FIELD NOTE 05RESET + HANDOVER

THE EVENT IS NOT OVER
WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT.

The audience sees the ending. The operation sees another phase: reset, dismantling, restoration, verification and handover.

Major events naturally concentrate attention on opening day, competition and ceremony. Operationally, however, the lifecycle continues after the public leaves. Temporary assets still occupy the site, contractors still need sequencing, outstanding works remain open and the permanent venue still needs to recover its normal purpose.

San Siro made this visible at speed. The Opening Ceremony was not the finish line: reverse operations began immediately, the stadium had to return to football use and the rehearsal village in Parco dei Capitani had to disappear before the park could be restored and handed back.

The final impression a venue owner has of an event is often created after the audience has already gone home.

The Olympic Village in Milan was an even more concentrated version of the same principle. My Site Manager assignment was specifically about dismantling and close-out: removing temporary assets, coordinating the final contractors and shrinking the site in a controlled sequence until it could be handed back.

Reset is not construction played backwards. Access changes, teams demobilise at different speeds, information disappears if close-out is poorly managed and the tolerance for unfinished details gets smaller as the site empties. The project is finished only when the place is ready for what comes next.
